Windsurfing: Ynyslas Wind Direction: S Wind Stength: 30-40 knots Surf / Sea State: 4 foot surf Air Temperature: 9ºC Sea Temperature: 9ºC Weather: Rain Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Weather station was reading around 20-25 knots and anemometer on the beach
confirmed that so as i don't have a 5m I rigged my 5.6m and got out on the
water. Once on the water the wind immediately picked up to around 30 knots
with 40 knot plus gusts out the back. Clearly the 5.6m was far too much and
i paid the price by getting slammed on my gybe out the back and then well
and truly munched by the wave I was gybing on!
I eventually managed to come up for air and fight my way back to my kit and
sail back to the beach. There I discovered the wave had taken a dislike to
my sail and snapped a batten which was now protruding through the batten
pocket. No choice but to pack up and rig the 4.5m instead. the wind was
still around 0-40 knots so in the end it was actually the ideal size. A
little too big in some of the huge gusts and a little too small in some of
the lulls, but fine most of the time.
The conditions were pretty challenging with fairly gusty winds, a strong
current and waves that weren't just their usual 'bigger than they look from
the beach' but they were MUCH bigger than they looked from the beach.
Still, it was good fun and I did manage a couple of huge jumps. One in
particular was massive. I had no choice, it was a case of either slow down
and get flattened by a monster wave, or speed up and hit it at full blast
as it jacked up and get some huge air... I'm not ashamed to admit that I
bailed out of the jump on the way back down though!
Best part of the session was the front-side wave riding though, lots of
nice wave-rides and as I got a little more confident I caught a big
logo-high wave out the back, rode it upwind for a while until it started
breaking in front of me at which point I turned downwind and rode the wave,
a few of little turns to start with, then one big 180º Cutback into
the white water followed by another quick turn onto the face again, the
wave then steepened up while I id a few more nice big turns off the top,
followed by another cut-back into the white water. This time as I came out
onto the open face again the wave jacked up and started pitching forcing me
to straighten up, as I did the lip hit the top of my sail and I was right
under the lip but managed to power out through a curtain of water and ride
away.... Nice.
After that I decided to call it a day before I got too cocky and broke
something else.
Of course, there was no-one around to see these death defying feats of
heroism. Luckily we have the FON session diaries so that I can at least
tell you about them.
